What Is Titanium Coil&strip

Hot-rolled titanium coil&strip is produced through the rolling and annealing of semi-finished titanium plates and then wound into a roll. Cold-rolled titanium coil&strip is the further processing of hot-rolled sheets by picking and washing in acid. The sheet is then pressed and rolled into a coil.

Titanium Coil&strip Characteristics

Specifications of the titanium coil&strip
The titanium coil&strip can be forged from the 6AL-4AV alloyed titanium up to the Grade 5 titanium plate. The chemical composition of the titanium coil&strip consist of standard properties which include aluminum 5.50-6.75%, vanadium 3.5-4.5%, carbon 0.08%, oxygen 0.2%, nitrogen 0.05%, and hydrogen 0.0125%, all structured depending on the uses of the final product. With a high melting range of up to 3020°F, the titanium coil&strip can be manipulated to various products with increased hardness and weldability due to the presence of aluminum and vanadium.

Physical properties of the titanium coil&strip
The titanium coil&strip is considered as one of the most flexible titanium products due to its ability to bend and shape in any way. As part of the Titanium 6AL-4V family, the nature of the sheet can be cut in any direction for application in various projects. The titanium coil&strip is rustproof and can be found in two grades, grade 1 and grade 2. The titanium coil&strip also comes in a rugged design that adjusts its aesthetic look.

Tensile properties of the titanium coil&strip
With minimums of 125 KSI and 115 KSI in yield, the titanium coil&strip highly contribute to its strength. However, the tensile properties vary depending on thickness, orientation, and engineering requirements. The titanium coil&strip is also corrosion resistant to most products to boiling point.

Is Titanium Coil&strip Magnetic

Titanium coil&strip is a prevalent metal due to its strength, lightweight, and resistance to corrosion. While it has many desirable properties, one question that often arises is whether or not titanium is magnetic. The short answer is no, titanium is not magnetic.

This is because titanium has a crystalline structure with no unpaired electrons, which are required for a material to exhibit magnetic properties. This means that titanium does not interact with magnetic fields and is considered to be a diamagnetic material. In comparison, other metals such as iron, cobalt, and nickel are magnetic because they have unpaired electrons, which allow them to be attracted to magnetic fields.

When these metals are subjected to a magnetic field, they become magnetized and will remain so until the magnetic field is removed. It's important to note that the non-magnetic properties of titanium can be affected by the presence of impurities, such as iron. If a titanium alloy contains a significant amount of iron, it may exhibit some magnetic properties. However, pure titanium does not have any magnetic properties.

The non-magnetic properties of titanium make it an ideal metal for use in a variety of applications, including medical devices, aerospace, and chemical processing. In these applications, titanium coil&strip is often chosen because it will not interfere with magnetic fields, making it a safe and reliable choice. In conclusion, titanium is a non-magnetic metal due to its crystalline structure and the absence of unpaired electrons. While titanium alloys may exhibit some magnetic properties if they contain significant amounts of iron, pure titanium is non-magnetic and can be used in a variety of applications where it will not interfere with magnetic fields.

Method for Increasing the Yield of Titanium Coil&strip Processing

The production process of titanium coil&strip is: hot-rolled strip--hot-rolled strip tailor-welded, linking—annealing—pickling--surface grinding—rolling—cleaning--vacuum annealing--leveling, straightening-- finishing, and packing.

Before cold rolling, the two ends of the strips are connected to titanium strips in order to improve the yield of the finished product. The surface oxide layer of the titanium strip after hot rolling needs to be cleared by the "mechanical descaling, mixed acid pickling" process. The capacity of the single stand mill can meet the production requirements of the cold rolling of titanium strips. Because of the remarkable properties of titanium, the cold rolling of titanium strips is usually rolled with a smaller diameter work roll mill under high tension, and the final annealing must be vacuum annealing to ensure the purpose of product surface. Leveling and stretching is to make the finished titanium strip obtain a suitable surface condition and a good plate shape.

The specification of hot rolled strip for cold rolling is (3~6)mmx(600~1600)mm, and the weight of a single coil is less than 10t. The preparation of raw materials mainly consists of assembling small strips into large strips, welding titanium bands, cutting and renewal of titanium bands, cutting edges, etc., because the cold rolling of titanium strips generally uses reversible rolling mills, so that the ends of the strips are part of the head and tail.

If it cannot be rolled normally, the titanium material will have a greater waste. Therefore, the guide belt must be connected at both ends of the strip before cold rolling to increase the yield of the finished product and reduce the production cost. When the material of the titanium tape and the strip blank are both pure titanium, butt welding connection is used, but when the material of the titanium tape is not pure titanium (such as stainless steel, etc.), since direct welding cannot be carried out, it must be connected by mechanical riveting. The titanium strip must be removed at the end of rolling. The titanium strip can be used repeatedly. The raw material preparation stage requires a strips assembly unit to assemble small hot-rolled strips into large strips. The hot-rolled strips are welded on the titaniuming strips, and the titanium strips after the intermediate rolling are welded. Carry out the excision of the original titanium tape and weld the appropriate new titanium tape. In order to make the titanium tape reusable, it is necessary to set up titanium straightening unit, which is used to straighten and cut the head and tail of the used titanium tape, and to manufacture new titanium tapes.

Advantages of Titanium Coil&strip

Titanium is lightweight, strong, corrosion resistant and abundant in nature. Titanium and its alloys possess tensile strengths from 30,000 psi to 200,000 psi (210-1380 MPa), which are equivalent to those strengths found in most of alloy steels. The density of titanium is only 56 percent that of steel, and its corrosion resistance compares well with that of platinum. Of all the elements in the earth's crust, titanium is the ninth most plentiful. Titanium has a high melting point of 3135°F (1725°C). This melting point is approximately 400°F (220°C) above the melting point of steel and approximately 2000°F (1100°C) above that of aluminum. It also has the advantage of a very thin, conductive oxide surface film, and a hard, smooth surface that limits adhesions of foreign materials.

Titanium is highly resistant to chemical attack and has the highest strength to weight ratio of any metal. These unique properties make Titanium suitable for a wide range of applications. It's stiffness to weight ratio as steel is similar to steel meaning it can be used as a substitute where weight is an important consideration.

This is well highlighted in aviation where its use in landing gear and compressor fans has drastically improved thrust to weight ratios. Titanium is highly recyclable which reduces costs involved in its production. Its inertness means that it can survive weathering and consequentially has a lower lifetime cost that other metals used in architecture and construction.
It is also biocompatible making it well suited to medical usage where it is nontoxic and able to osseointegrate.

FAQ

Q: What is titanium coil&strip?

A: Hot-rolled titanium coil&strip is produced through the rolling and annealing of semi-finished titanium plates and then wound into a roll. Cold-rolled titanium coil&strip is the further processing of hot-rolled sheets by picking and washing in acid. The sheet is then pressed and rolled into a coil.

Q: Is titanium easy to bend?

A: Titanium is half as dense as steel and is therefore known as a "light metal." It is also more elastic or flexible and easier to bend. But because of this, titanium is difficult to machine as it gums up mills and drills.

Q: Does titanium coil&strip tarnish?

A: Pure titanium is resistant to rusting and corrosion from liquids including chemicals, acids, and saltwater as well as various gases because of its oxide barrier. As the name oxide implies, oxygen is needed to produce this barrier.

Q: How long does it take for titanium coil&strip to oxidize?

A: The oxide film formed on titanium at room temperature immediately after a clean surface is exposed to air is 12-16 A thick. After 70 days it is about 50 A. It continues to grow slowly reaching a thickness of 80-90 A in 545 days and 250 A in four years.

Q: Do titanium coil&strips conduct electricity?

A: Titanium is not a good conductor of electricity. If the conductivity of copper is considered to be 100%, titanium would have a conductivity of 3.1%. From this it follows that titanium would not be used where good conductivity is a prime factor.

Q: Should titanium coil&strips be removed?

A: The shortest answer is: it is not necessary, although there are some exceptions to consider: After a while, titanium integrates seamlessly with the bone, so, strictly speaking, it is not necessary to remove the fixation plates, unless the patient's body has any kind of negative reaction.

Q: How to prevent oxidation of titanium coil&strip?

A: It's a good idea to practice to limit the exposure of titanium to high temperatures to prevent the formation of excessive scale and embrittlement. Titanium is chemically active at elevated temperatures and will oxidize in air resulting in the formation of scale.

Q: What is the biggest problem when welding titanium coil&strip?

A: Oxygen and nitrogen also diffuse into titanium at temperatures above 400°C, causing severe embrittlement. These facts mean that it is a challenge to weld and not all of the current arc welding processes are suitable. The basic problem is atmospheric contamination such that the weld zone can become very crack sensitive.

Q: What happens to titanium coil&strip when it gets hot?

A: Because of its high tensile strength and creep resistance, commercially pure titanium can remain stable at temperatures up to approximately 572°F. Compared to other metals, such as aluminum, titanium has low thermal conductivity, which can result in excessive heat build-up.

Q: What are the factors that affect the corrosion resistance of titanium coil&strip?

A: Environmental conditions
Where you use titanium makes a big difference in how well it resists rust. In places like the ocean or factories, which are more prone to corrosion, you might need to take extra steps to make sure your titanium lasts. Things like temperature, humidity, pH levels, and chemicals can all impact how well titanium holds up in these conditions.
Surface finish
The finish on titanium products can also affect how well they resist rust. A smooth, polished surface will have fewer cracks and blemishes that can start rusting. It's important to use the right surface preparation and finishing techniques to get the most rust-proofing out of your titanium.

Q: What is so special about titanium coil&strip?

A: Titanium is highly resistant to chemical attack and has the highest strength to weight ratio of any metal. These unique properties make Titanium suitable for a wide range of applications.

Q: How strong is a titanium coil&strip?

A: The common Ti-6Al-4V alloy (per the AMS 4911 specification) has a tensile strength of about 130,000 to 140,000psi (around 900 megapascals if you prefer metric). Commercially pure titanium grades, meanwhile, are around 25,000psi (175 MPa).

Q: How to improve the yield of titanium coil processing?

A: Before cold rolling, the two ends of the strips are connected to titanium strips in order to improve the yield of the finished product. The surface oxide layer of the titanium strip after hot rolling needs to be cleared by the "mechanical descaling, mixed acid pickling" process. The capacity of the single stand mill can meet the production requirements of the cold rolling of titanium strips.
