Grade 21 Titanium Forging

The Grade 21 titanium forging can be used to make aircraft structural parts or engine parts fasteners and hydraulic pipes with temperature requirements, but also can be used as the matrix and casting of metal matrix composite materials. The alloy is an ideal material for air hood parts near the engine room of aircraft, such as Boeing 777 aircraft engine room air hood produced a good effect by using the alloy. Grade 21 titanium alloy is a very developed metastable β titanium alloy that offers the high specific strength and good cold formabilty, but has been specifically designed for improved oxidation resistance, elevated temperature strength, creep resistance, ande thermal stability. Its nominal component is Ti-15Mo-3Al-2.7Nb-0.25Si.Grade 21 titanium alloy is developed by Timet in 1989 in response to the requirements of the NASP in the US National Aeronautics and Space Shuttle Program.

Main materials:

The main raw materials used to prepare Grade 21 titanium alloy are sponge titanium and aluminum-molybdenum alloy, titanium-tin alloy, sponge zirconium and titanium-silicon alloy. First step is mixing the titanium sponge and pressing the electrode. Then vacuum plasma welding box is used to weld the electrode to ensure there is no inclusion and external pollution risk. The next step is going through three times VAR melting to obtain high clean and uniform ingot.The Grade 21 titanium forging is obtained by several forging processes using 5000T High-speed forging equipment.The microstructure of Grade 21 titanium alloy is metastable β phase after β solution with air cooling or faster cooling. Non-isothermal ω phase and a small amount of Ti5Si3 phase are occasionally found in water-cooled microstructure. The aging phase transformation process at different temperatures is related to aging temperature and time. When the aging temperature is above 450℃, only α phase precipitates out of β matrix, and finally forms α+β two-phase microstructure. When the aging temperature is lower than 400℃, the transition isothermal ω phase is first precipitated in the β matrix, and the α phase is precipitated in the alloy with the aging time. When the aging temperature is below 200℃, the diffusion of alloying elements is difficult to proceed due to the low temperature, and no phase transformation occurs.

Producting technique：

It is most useful for applications above 290℃, with thermal stability up to 625℃ and creep resistance compatable to Ti-6Al-4V. Developing commercial applications in forgings include aerospace components and prosthetic devices.Ultrasonic test is in accordance with AMS 2631 & AMS STD-2154.
