Overview：

Grade 38 titanium forging is easily welded in the annealed condition using methods typically applied to titanium, such as TIG, MIG, EB, and plasma.Due to the addition of more expensive alloyed elements and the greater deformation resistance during the hot working process, the traditional medium-strength titanium alloy has a high production cost.It greatly limits the large-scale application of titanium alloy. Grade 38 titanium alloy has little deformation resistance during hot processing and can be cold processed. It is the first material for military armor protection plates and vehicles.Grade 38 titanium is developed by Allegheng Technology Company (ATI) , which can replace the most common high strength titanium alloy. Grade 38 alloy composition is Ti-4Al-2.5V-1.5Fe-0.25O. Compared with Ti-6Al-4V alloy, Grade 38 alloy uses iron instead of higher cost vanadium as β stable element, and its strength and elongation are similar to or slightly higher than Ti-6Al-4V, the difference is that both the cold and hot processing performance is particularly excellent, which can be made into a series of finished products such as thin plate, coil, strip, precision hot rolled strip, thick plate, seamless pipe and so on.

Main materials:

The main raw materials used to prepare Grade 38 titanium forging are sponge titanium and alloying elements, including aluminum vanadium alloy, aluminum bean, iron nail and titanium dioxide. The φ 720mm ingot was fabricated by three times VAR melting after mixing and electrode preparation. The phase transition point of Grade 38 titanium alloy was 970±5℃ by using the method of temperature rising metallography. The Grade 38 ingot was forged by several times, and finally it was obtained.The experimental results show that Grade 38 titanium is easier to process than Ti-6Al-4V. The Grade 38 titanium plate wtih double annealing has good fracture toughness, the bending radius of the cold tied and annealed Grade 38 titanium sheet is 2.5 times of the thickness. Grade 38 titanium alloy can also be heat treated and aged to obtain high strength.

With the increase of annealing temperature in two-phase zone, the number of primary α phase decreases gradually and the speed of spheroidization is equal to that of axial spheroidization. The reserach results show that the volume fraction of β phase increases gradually as the degree increases. The annealing temperature of It has great influence on the strength and hardness . When the annealing temperature increases from 650℃ to 800℃, the tensile strength and yield strength of Grade 38 alloy decrease. In addition the elongation and the reduction rate of the section was increased. When the annealing temperature of it is between 700 ℃ and 750 ℃, the alloy strength, plasticity, hardness, microstructure match is relatively good. The optimal annealing process is as follows: 700 ~ 750 ℃/90min, air cooling.
